Ashokan Pillar in Delhi, a Monument with a Historic Legacy by Pushpitha Wijesinghe
The pillars of Ashoka were created during the reign of the renowned Mauryan emperor Ashoka, and were erected in various locations throughout northern India in the 3rd century BC. Standing forty to fifty feet with a weight of up to 50 tons, the imposing pillars bear testament to the glory of King Ashoka and his Buddhist faith.
Ashokan pillars typically are constructed of sandstone. The similarity in design of the pillars suggests that they were embellished by craftsmen from the same area. The column shafts are invariably smooth and plain, of circular proportions, formed of a single block of stone and tapering somewhat from the base to the summit. On the pinnacle a crowning animal is to be seen, typically a lion, bull or elephant.
Two Ashokan pillars are to be seen in Delhi, with the more famous and far better preserved pillar standing near the Delhi Gate. This pillar stands on a three storey pyramidal structure constructed on the orders of Firozshah Tughlaq. The imposing stone pillar was transported from its original site in Topra in Haryana, an undertaking of Herculean proportions; to move this immense structure to Delhi, it was enveloped in silk cotton and placed on a soft bed on a 42 wheel wagon. Two hundred labourers pulled the structure with firm ropes to the banks of the Yamuna, where the column was positioned on large barges and transported to Kushak.
Upon the completion of each storey of the majestic foundation, the pillar was lifted on to it; in this manner it was finally raised to the summit of the impressive base. After installation, intricate friezes in white and black stone were positioned surrounding the capital and a copper cupola was raised over it.
The pillar's Ashokan decree elaborates ten of the Buddha's commandments and is in Brahmi script. In subsequent centuries, many other minor inscriptions of travellers and pilgrims were made. An engraving in Sanskrit describes the glorious conquests of Visala, a Chauhan king of the 12th century.

From a thread on Finishing.com: "If the roof has not been painted I would suggest a stiff brush and a mildly acidic solution, there are a great number of things available that will work just fine provided you are willing to put in the elbow grease (ketchup is an unusual example, but it does work!) If you are looking for something that will not ruin the lawn or plants around the roof I suggest Kool-Aid or some other powdered drink mix, mix it with a bit of water, rub it on and scrub with a will, it's mildly acidic and non-toxic to the plants that you may have below the roof, the first rain will remove the sugary coating that is left when it dries (or just rinse with water). If you are intent on the copper staying bright I suggest looking for a clear spray on lacquer (test it somewhere it won't be seen first). Your local hardware store will have what you need."
