Are there any legal issues for a 16 year old living alone in a cottage on her parents land?
Long story short, my dad and his carpenter friends built a cottage-sized "home" as a project, in the back of our yard since we have a bit of land.
Now that it's near completion, my parents have offered me the use of living in the cottage. They are going to provide the utilities, along with heat/air, etc.
Is this legal?
I'll still be able to use the regular house when it gets too cold, but would love to have my own space like this.

I am not a lawyer. That said, I would think the law would vary state by state. I assume you will go to school as required by law. Your parents are obviously there for you and approve of the arrangement, and I assume they are supervising you and would not tolerate illegal activity on their property, Still, it is your parents that should be raising the relevant legal questions.
You sound intelligent, and my guess is that you will do fine and get a jump-start on independence.
