More Great Information on Dog Autumn:

Preparing Your Home for a Great Winter Season

When the days turn shorter and nights start becoming chilly, you should know that winter is on its way and this should be a call for adequate preparation. By winterizing your home, you will save a lot and also have some peace of mind for the whole winter season. You can carry out the whole winterizing process in only one weekend by having a clear guideline of what needs to be done and having all the necessary materials ready.

The first thing that you should do is to inspect the roof, gutters and downspouts. Check the roof for leaks and check flashing to ensure that water cannot enter your home. You should clean the gutters to get rid of any debris that may have accumulated over time and then clear the downspouts by spraying using a hose. Confirm that vents or attic fans are in good condition and have any nests or other blockages cleared.

Inspect your home exterior for cracks. This is where you should inspect your house for cracks and have they completely sealed if present. You should also ensure that there are no openings in windows and doors and this will help to keep out the chilly weather as well as retaining the warmth within the house. Check glass windows and doors for cracks and consider repainting any exposed wood.

Inspect your furnace and get the fireplace ready. Inspect your furnace to ensure that it is in good working condition. You should also keep stock of furnace filters as you will need to be changing these on monthly basis during the winter season. Ensure that the fireplace damper is opening and closing properly and you can also have the chimney cleaned if this has not been done for a while. Buy chop wood and store in a dry place.

Other preparations for the winter season include reversing fan direction, wrapping water pipes to prevent bursting, covering outdoor furniture, inspecting deck or patio foundations and preparing an emergency kit among others. Sparing time to carry out all this will help you to avoid surprises, which can be quite expensive during the winter season.

The drop Equinox is a good period to start thinking about planning the house for winter period, because as conditions begin to dip, the house will require servicing to keep it in tip-top shape through winter period.

Autumn is usually a prelude to dropping winter period conditions, regardless of where you live. It might rainfall or snowfall or, as Mark Letterman says, "fall is my preferred period in Los Angeles, looking at the wildlife change shade and drop from the bushes and shrubs." Did you know there is only one state in the U. S. Declares where the conditions have never soaked below zero? Give up? It's the Hawaiian Islands.

My dog refuses to eat dog food. Help?

My dog, Autumn, is about 13 years old. About a week ago, she stopped eating her dog food. She is more than willing to eat dog treats, and table scraps, but i don't want her to eat treats and scraps the rest of her life. I haven't changed the food at all. I've tried adding wet food to the dry food, and giving her just the wet food, but she still won't touch it. I have an appointment with the vet in about 3 days, but i wanted to get a few more opinions on here too.

Well is does sound like she should have a vet check. If he says she is ok than quit feeding her the table scraps and treats. If you just feed her those then she is not going to eat her food. It is a good idea to mix in a little boiled chicken and rice(without the garlic and noodles....which are bad for dogs.

Bree....not everything that is ok for humans to eat is good for dogs. Dogs cannot have a lot of human foods. Such as:
Alcoholic beverages Can cause intoxication, coma, and death.
Baby food Can contain onion powder, which can be toxic to dogs. (Please see onion below.) Bones from fish, poultry, or other meat sources Can cause obstruction or laceration of the digestive system.
Cat food Generally too high in protein and fats.
Chocolate, coffee, tea, and other caffeine Contain caffeine, theobromine, or theophylline, which can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous systems.
Citrus oil extracts Can cause vomiting.
Fat trimmings Can cause pancreatitis.
Grapes and raisins Contain an unknown toxin, which can damage the kidneys. There have been no problems associated with grape seed extract.
Hops Unknown compound causes panting, increased heart rate, elevated temperature, seizures, and death.
Human vitamin supplements containing iron Can damage the lining of the digestive system and be toxic to the other organs including the liver and kidneys.
Large amounts of liver Can cause Vitamin A toxicity, which affects muscles and bones.
Macadamia nuts Contain an unknown toxin, which can affect the digestive and nervous systems and muscle.
Marijuana Can depress the nervous system, cause vomiting, and changes in the heart rate.
Milk and other dairy products Some adult dogs and cats do not have sufficient amounts of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the lactose in milk. This can result in diarrhea. Lactose-free milk products are available for pets.
Moldy or spoiled food garbage Can contain multiple toxins causing vomiting and diarrhea and can also affect other organs.
Mushrooms Can contain toxins, which may affect multiple systems in the body, cause shock, and result in death.
Onions and garlic (raw, cooked, or powder) Contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia. Cats are more susceptible than dogs. Garlic is less toxic than onions.
Persimmons Seeds can cause intestinal obstruction and enteritis.
Pits from peaches and plums Can cause obstruction of the digestive tract.
Potato, rhubarb, and tomato leaves potato and tomato stems Contain oxalates, which can affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems. This is more of a problem in livestock.
Raw eggs Contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin). This can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Raw eggs may also contain Salmonella.
Raw fish Can result in a thiamine (a B vitamin) deficiency leading to loss of appetite, seizures, and in severe cases, death. More common if raw fish is fed regularly.
Salt If eaten in large quantities it may lead to electrolyte imbalances.
String Can become trapped in the digestive system; called a "string foreign body."
Sugary foods Can lead to obesity, dental problems, and possibly diabetes mellitus.
Table scraps (in large amounts) Table scraps are not nutritionally balanced. They should never be more than 10% of the diet. Fat should be trimmed from meat; bones should not be fed.
Tobacco Contains nicotine, which affects the digestive and nervous systems. Can result in rapid heart beat, collapse, coma, and death.
Yeast dough Can expand and produce gas in the digestive system, causing pain and possible rupture of the stomach or intestines.
Xylitol (artificial sweetener) Can cause liver failure.

This is just to name a few.
