How do you make a patch?

Like those cool embroidered/sewed patches with names/logos/labels on them? If you don't mind step-by-step and the materials needed? (Under $50 if possible:). I don't want to go and ask someone to make me one...

To make your own personal patch you will need: Some white cotton fabric, an embroidery hoop and some embroidery thread. Large needle. 1/4 yard Wonder Under. Draw the outline of the shape you want in simple outlines( pencil), then decide where you want your color shading. Start by threading needle with your first color thread. Cut a piece long enough to work with, but not too long to pull your stitches with. Divide this group in half, embroidery thread has about 12 strands in a single thread, so divide into 6, or however many half is in the thread you are using. Start from the edge of your design, and start filling in with small 1/8" running stitches, simple in and out stitches and continue until the whole area is filled, knotting on the backside, and adding more thread as needed. Change out the colors as you work to get the desired effect. When your entire patch is filled in, cut around the whole thing leaving about 1/4" of the cotton fabric. Turn the fabric under and use plain cotton thread to tack down this edge to the backing. Very easy, not complicated. Use an iron and iron on Wonder Under to the backside of your patch. Then cut around Wonder Under to the exact patch size. Then iron on the patch to whatever you want. (following directions on Wonder Under) Then take regular needle and thread and tac small stitches where you can't see them around the patch. Making custom patches is quite a bit of work, but you can do them fairly quickly once you get the hang of it. And it shouldn't cost more than $20 and you will have enough for many patches. Buy the embroidery thread in pkgs of mixed colors if you can find them at the craft store, that saves money, but embroidery thread is fairly cheap, about 2 for $1, but you can also find some in gold and silver for a little more $.
