Falling leaves, a landscapers worst nightmare, can actually be one of the greatest beneficiaries in maintaining a healthy lawn. Landscapers who not only have green thumb but who also enjoy living green will find comfort in knowing that utilizing fall leaves as mulch and as a fertilizer not only benefits grass and gardens but also keeps trash bagged up leaves out of landfills.

The key tip in turning fall leaves into a useful tool in landscaping is to not let them collect in piles on the lawn. Letting them pile will actually cause the complete opposite effect as it will create dead spots on the land underneath as it will prevent sunlight and oxygen from reaching the ground. However, by raking all fallen leaves into a pile and then running over them with a mulching lawn mower will create excellent mulches to be used immediately this fall to keep the roots of flower beds and plants warm during the winter.

Landscapers who have already taken care of the mulching process in preparation for the winter can use the fallen leaves in a compost to create soil for the spring. Remembering to turn the fallen leaves weekly with a garden fork as well as weekly watering will produce even richer soil come spring time. For landscapers who haven’t set up a compost pile, a simple 3 sided cement block bin (that allows for front entrance to turn the pile and removal) or a small circular unit fenced with wire will work well, as long as there’s some ventilation.

The addition of manure, food scraps and mixing “browns” (wood chips, shredded newspaper) and “greens”( fruit peelings, vegetable scraps etc.) will also accelerate the decomposing process.
