Seeing the Art of New York on Primary School Trips by Angela Bowden
As one of the world's leading cities, New York is one of the best places to go on primary school trips to introduce youngsters to the arts. Located on the northeastern seaboard of the United States, the city is one of the hearts of the art world. With innumerable galleries, private studios, exhibitions and schools, you need to have a game plan when travelling to New York to discover and explore the art scene.
One of the best ways to begin your understanding of the New York City art world is to visit the major museums and get an idea of the breadth of the history of art that is collected within this city. Three places that you must visit while in New York are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art -- Located at 5th Avenue and 82nd Street, The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) is one of the premiere museums, not only in New York, but also in the world. Primary school trips to The Met will teach students how the museum was founded in 1870 and that the first museum building opened in 1872, in a different location than the current one. The museum now houses more than two million works in 19 different curatorial departments, and the main building is one of the world's largest art galleries. The collections cover a vast range of styles, periods, and histories from all over the world - from ancient Egypt to the art of the Far East. You can get lost for days discovering them all.
The Museum of Modern Art -- Even if modern art is not the focus of your primary school trips to New York, you would be remiss not to take students to the Museum of Modern Art (The MoMA). Located on 53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, the MoMA is one of the most influential and important museums of modern art in the world. With works of design, paint, print, and other forms of media [including an archive with over 300,000 books], there is something for everyone at the MoMA. Be sure to seek out Van Gogh's Starry Night and the Campbell's Soup Cans by Andy Warhol.
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum -- A visit to see the vast collection at the Guggenheim Museum in the Upper East Side of Manhattan is a great way to round out your primary school trips to New York City. Opened in 1959, the Guggenheim Museum is housed in a building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and is, in itself, a major architectural landmark. There are several branches of Guggenheim museums placed all over the world, and the New York City Guggenheim Museum offers several permanent collections of impressionist, post-impressionist, contemporary, and modern art. Unlike other museums, which are often divided into their different collections, the Guggenheim Museum is conceived of as a whole, where the collections can grow and divide as various exhibits require.

I am doing a project on Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. What were their reaction to it?
Generally his houses and small buildings like the churches were met with admiration while the more dramatic buildings either in details (like the tall slender columns of the office building in Bartlesville) or overall design (like the Guggenheim or Dallas Theater Center building) were met with much more caution - especially by the people who had to use them.
His buildings always made a dramatic statement and even some of the people who liked his houses found that coping with his demands that he design every detail down to the chairs, etc., resulted in some uncomfortable (literally) aspects of life there. The DTC building has stairs that are much too narrow a step and carpeted that actors are supposed to use in the dark, little backstage space, and windows in the auditorium provided with shaped shutters to keep out daylight so he can have a nice row of windows all around the building. The Guggenheim imposes a display space that is sort of a parallelogram repeated over and over down the ramp offering none of the variation in scale that most museums enjoy for displaying different sized art.
One of the things we have to be aware of is the stunning age of his early Prairie Style houses. I grew up in the 50's when ranch house style homes were first popular so my early view of his houses seemed sort of "ho-hum" until I realized that they dated from 1895 or so - 60 years before the ranch houses.
