The Science of How Solar Power Garden Lights Work
Solar power garden lights
are an innovative way to lighten up any yard or lawn. These garden light sources prove to be a good investment, as although they are quite costly they do not make use of electricity, thus helping you cut back on electric costs. They also do not require any wiring or installation. These solar power garden lights generate light through collecting energy from the sun during the daytime, and releasing it at night to illuminate your garden.
Solar garden lights are composed of a battery, LED light and control board. It also has a four-cell solar array, the material responsible for collecting Solar Energy from the sun. These garden lights usually light up automatically once the sun sets, this is made possible through a photoresistor, which is the same material that automatically switches street lamps on at night.
A photoresistor works by changing its resistance depending on the amount of light it is exposed to. In the daytime when a lot of light hits it, it lessens resistance and conducts electricity well. When no light hits it, it becomes increasingly resistant and conducts electricity poorly.

A garden light has four solar cells which produces 1.8 volts of electricity and different ranges of electric currents. The range of electric currents varies according to how many solar cells there are and how much light they receive. These solar cells are directly connected to a battery through diodes.
A typical garden light runs on a standard AA Nicad battery. It generates 1.2 volts and can accommodate 700 milliamp-hours. It can fully charge itself during the daytime, except for cloudy days or during the winter season. When night comes, the solar cells stop generating power and power is then transmitted from the solar cell and battery to the controller board. The photoresistor then senses the light absence, and configures the three-transistor circuit to turn on the Led Lights. The LED produces an estimate of 1.23 volts taken from the battery; half the light created by a candle. When fully charged, the LED can generate light for a good 15 hours.

When you take these apart you usually find two AA or AAA sized Rechargeable batteries (typically Ni Cad) Ni cad's are 1.25V ea (x2 = 2.5V) the solar cells have to produce more than the battery voltage in order to charge the batteries. So at least 3.0 Vdc. Output will vary with the amount of sun light and direction the cells are facing relative to the sun. With the batteries connected and charging you may expect to find 3 to 4 volts. The surface area of these cells are pretty small so I would expect to see no more than 75mA to 100ma charging current in full sun and probably 50mA on average. (And this is being optimistic)
The load of the batteries being charged helps to limit the solar cell out put. When you disconnect the batteries or use a very small load you may expect to see several additional volts being produced... (No load voltage will be higher)
There are a lot of iff's and unknowns here as you do not know the configuration of the cells on the light. What looks like one cell is actually be many individual cells connected in a series / parallel combinations to achieve the voltage and current required by the application.
Most of these lights use LED's (2 or 3) which draw 10 to 15mA each at fill brightness. And as the battery voltage drops during the night so does the current draw. The point I am trying to make is that not a hole lot of power is being generated during the day to keep a couple of LED's glowing for a few hours.
