Koi Pond or Goldfish Pond, Which is right for you?
If you have limited space, then choosing a koi pond may not be the right choice for you. Koi require a much larger pond area than goldfish, they will continue to grow no matter what size of the pond area that they are in, they can grow up to be 2 ft. in length and up to 40 lbs. in weight, and require a minimum of about 1500 gallons of Pond Water.
Whereas goldfish will only grow to the size that their environment will allow, making them a much better choice for a smaller pond area. They will do well in just about any type or size of water feature, because they adapt to the size of the pond.
Can you have both Koi and goldfish in your pond? Yes, you can. They can co-exist very well together. If you have a smaller pond limit your koi to just one or two. I myself started with a very small pond, about 150 gallon, and purchased my fish, (4 goldfish and 2 koi) before doing the proper research and was then worried about my fish surviving in that smaller environment. If you are like me and most pond enthusiasts your fish will become like pets and you will want to keep them happy and healthy. So again, like most pond builders, the number one complaint after building their pond, I wish I had built a larger pond, So I did. This time, having limited space, I made it about 500 gallon. Remember bigger is always better. I am happy to say that all my fish are doing well. But learn from my mistakes, do your research first. Koi are a more sensitive fish than goldfish, so they require a little more care.
Another thing to keep in mind is if you are interested more in having a water garden with lots of different varieties of plants, Koi and plants don't mix well. Koi eat many types of pond plants, so you have to be selective in what types of plants you place in your pond. All ponds look better with some type of plants and greenery in them, plus your fish need them for protection from too much sun and gives them hiding places to avoid predators. I have found that water lilies and iris do well with both, they don't bother them, and they look great.
