Reflections on a Life Now Gone: My Father's Garden
“Go and fetch me the ingredients I need! Pick them fresh and be quick about it! And don’t forget to pull the garlic up from the base!” I stood still grinning mischievously. “Make haste!” she squealed. “There is precious little time!”
Meg and I had a weird kind of energy when it came time to cooking. We took on a very “Macbeth-ian, Weird Sisters,” motif and adored talking like we were cooking up children rather than pizza. I was still an apprentice witch, learning the tricks of the trade from my superior. My ideas, however, were fresh in comparison to that of the old biddy barking orders. Left to my own devising, we could have eaten any number of incredible concoctions. But there were standards to be met and our mother’s sensitive pallet to take into consideration. Pizza would have to suffice, for now.
The grass was moist from the cooling evening air. The days of summer that were hottest were already on us. Our mother had called earlier to tell us she was going to be home late and we should fend for ourselves. My sister and I had alternative plans to remedy our mother’s disgruntled being. She needed a pick me up after a hard day.
The dew on the grass was a relief from the dry earth that encompassed the ground within the Garden Wall. Meg had forgotten to do her chore. I would pay for it, no doubt. I swung the basket from my arm and dropped it onto the ground.
The beans were coming in nicely. The echoed the attention we paid to them. The more we picked, the more they would grow. The vines had begun to take over the little white picket fencing we had built to support the growth. It was a treasure trove of little emeralds, waiting to be mined. But I needed to keep focused. I needed to find the right ingredients.
An onion. The biggest one I could find. We would sauté that first with some chicken and use them both to decorate our lovely pizza golem. The Russian onion would do well. One of father’s favorite flavors, I recalled. He would be happy we were using the onions rather than letting them rot in the ground. I remembered that we were going to need to braid them together to let them properly dry soon enough. Hanging onion and garlic in our garage remains one of my favorite smells of home.
Garlic, that was right. I needed to pull from the base or lose the bulb. We needed a good one, a bulb that would last us until we needed to come back down again. It was going to be tricky. The garlic was not as strong this year in comparison to the onions. I found an elephant bulb. Its cloves were already exposed from the earth. I would have little trouble retrieving it.
The basil next, yes, I needed to collect the basil now. It was a tricky process. You should be worried about letting your basil get sour. Like the beans, if they don’t get picked at different intervals, they produce bitterness and pointlessness. I had picked just about three times that week already, but no one would have ever guessed. Pick these dry, I reminded myself. Just like the beans. Pull from the stem, not the leaf.
I filled my basket and grabbed a few tomatoes on my way back to the fence gate. I thought about grabbing a zucchini for extra flavor, but they were looking a bit deflated. My sister had been lax in her duties. By this time, they should look bloated and full. I would turn on the sprinkler when I left.
I hurried my cargo into the house, which already smelled like a proper coven den. Spices and pots and pans and oils lined the counters. We had successfully collected what we needed from my father’s
garden
and we knew that our parents would be pleased with their supper. It was time to begin the ceremony. Dinner was approaching and mother would be home soon!
