Design Parameters for Die Designing in Rubber Extrusions
Rubber extrusion is the
method of forming products by forcing a rubber compound through a die
at high pressure. The shape of the product depends on the property of the rubber material, the pressure applied in the rubber extrusion process, and most importantly the design of the die. This is because rubber compounds exhibit a non-uniform flow through die edges and sections, even if the initial pressure applied is uniform. Natural rubber, SBR or styrene-butadiene co-polymer, and silicone rubber, are some of the commonly extruded rubber materials. Hence, careful designing of a rubber extrusion die is essential for producing the desired shape and length.
Plate or coin die, perform die, and final die are some types of rubber extrusion dies. There are a number of parameters that need to be considered while designing such rubber extrusion dies. They are:
1. Material Flow Pattern:
Creating a die that allows natural flow of rubber material is one of the greatest challenges in extrusion die designing. In order to achieve precision geometries, rubber compounds flow rapidly between thick sections and at a distance from the thin edges. One of the methods used to achieve this, is the traditional method of relieving the die's face. By doing this, the rubber material undergoes a pressure variation from high to low and hence a decrease in its velocity. A face-relieved die ensures effective exit of the material at a relaxed stage from the extrusion line. The extruded profile is of precision length or curvature as desired with smooth edges.
Non-uniform flow of rubber material is also attributed to the presence of sharp corners and inconsistent die openings in some areas of the die. By smoothing out the radius on all sharp corners, excessive drag of material that leads to rough-edged profiles is prevented. If the die opening is very small, a shorter land can be provided at the constriction area. If the die opening is very large, an adjustable dam can be constructed to slow down the material flow.
2. Prevention of Dead Spots:
When a certain amount of material is trapped inside the die for a prolonged time, there are certainties that they vulcanize due to frictional heat. Dead spots are material imperfections that occur on the surface of the extruded profile that occur due to material stagnation inside the die. Such dead spots also restrict the material flow leading to rough edges. Dead spots are often prevented by using tapered inserts inside the die.
3. Understanding Material Property:
Different types of rubber compounds vulcanize and cure at different temperatures. Silicone rubber extrusions swell as they leave the extrusion die. Certain other types of rubber material shrink when cured. In such cases, the die openings have to be designed larger or smaller than the desired size to suit the material nature. Hence, it is always necessary to predetermine the swelling or shrinkage of the dimension of the profile at the exit.
4. Design Flexibility:
Any simple or complex rubber extrusion die design should always have room for making adjustments or corrections. This not only allows flexibility in designing, but also avoids the appearance of dead spots. For instance, dies can be designed with adjustable dams to increase, decrease, or halt the flow of material.
