Hackers destroy Illinois water utility pump
In what is being seen as a cyber attack on a U.S. public utility, Joe Weiss, an industry security expert, reported that hackers, apparently from Russia, cracked into a critical computer system and damaged a water pump in central Illinois last week.
It appears that the hackers broke into the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) software and stole “customer usernames and passwords,” Weiss, a managing partner at Applied Control Systems LLC, reported in his blog post. DHS has confirmed the pump problem, but added that it is yet not verified whether it was the work of hackers.
Problems had been observed in remote access to the SCADA system in the past 2 to 3 months. And recently “there was damage the SCADA system was powered on and off, burning out a water pump,” added Weiss. Hacker said that this required almost no skill and could be reproduced by a two year old with a basic knowledge of Simatic.
The pump breakdown affected Springfield, Illinois, said the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
DHS probing incident:- DHS has confirmed the pump problem, but added that it is yet not verified whether it was the work of hackers.
While DHS claims its infrastructure is secure, a hacker named 'pr0f,' prompted by Boogaard's statement, posted several images on Pastebin on Friday showing “a really insecure system” in South Houston.
Peter Boogaard, deputy press secretary at the DHS, was quoted by Register as saying, “DHS and the FBI are gathering facts surrounding the report of a water pump failure in Springfield Illinois.
“At this time there is no credible corroborated data that indicates a risk to critical infrastructure entities or a threat to public safety.”

My well pump stopped working, can anyone help me diagnose it?
We have had a lot of rain and flooding in our area. Four day's ago my well pump stopped working, when I went out to see what the problem was, I found the well pit partially flooded, the water was covering the pressure switch and the pump and motor. I bought a submersible utility pump and pumped the pit out, there is no more water coming in so I have to assume it was excessive water flooding the pit rather than a leak of some kind causing the flooding in the well pit. I've checked the switch and it is working properly. Whenever I turn on the power the motor on the pump just hums for maybe thirty seconds and then I hear it kick off, it is not pumping water when it is on it only hums like maybe something has locked up in the pump or motor. I know very little about well pumps and would greatly appreciate any help I can get. If I have to change the pump I could also use some instruction on that as I have never done it. Please help!
It sounds like your pump needs to be rebuilt, or replaced.
If it's fairly new, I would rebuild it.
But if you have never done that kind of work, then I would call a professional.
The water may have come from a pressure relief valve on or near the holding tank.
The pump may not have switched off at the proper pressure for some reason.
