What are the evolutionary benefits to feces smelling the way it does?
Many people wonder why feces smells so bad. This is easily answered, but what I'm interested to know about are the evolutionary consequences to its smelling the way it does. Are they mostly disadvantages?
I understand that several insects and animals actually eat it for nutrition's sake, as gross as that seems. So one benefit might be to attract some species. There are also territorial markings, warning animals navigating territory, I suppose.
What would be the benefit for human beings though? Are there any or does it just stink!
The prime theory is that the stench prevents us from eating it up again. Whatever is being excreted in the form of feces is essentially all the wastes of our biological processes. Nutrient-wise, eating our own feces does not help us, and we may end up poisoning ourselves. Insects, as you said, would thrive on human feces because to them, feces is a motherload for nutritious foods. But we take quite a bit from other wastes too, especially from bacteria: think yogurt and sauerkraut, cheese and so on...
